Mother & Baby Appointments

The Department of Health provides free pregnancy-related visits; six in the first pregnancy and seven in subsequent pregnancies. Your two week and six week postnatal checks are also free.

Under 6’s

In Ardfert Medical Centre, we don’t charge for consultations under the age of 6 weeks, provided that the mother has been our patient during her pregnancy. However, if your child needs to be seen elsewhere during this time, you will likely be charged a fee.

Mens Health

Most men will develop symptoms of prostate trouble at some point. Talk to us if you are having problems with passing urine during the night, difficulty starting or stopping the stream or needing to pass urine frequently.

Women’s Health

We provide a range of services for women.  From smear tests, breast check and much more.

Blood Tests

Blood tests are brought to the lab at 11.30AM, so most tests (particularly kidney function and INRs for warfarin monitoring) should be done in the morning.

If you want to be checked for high cholesterol, you should be fasting for 14 hours before we take the blood. You may have water, but nothing else.

STI Checks

Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) are common. We can check for-and treat-chlamydia, genital warts, gonorrhoea, herpes and trichomonas. We can also check bloods for syphilis, HIV and hepatitis B & C if you are at risk.

Smear Tests

Since late 2008, smears have been free for women aged 25-60 at 3-5 yearly intervals. This is an excellent way of detecting precancerous changes that may be treated before anything more serious develops.

Diabetes Management

Most patients with diabetes can be managed in a primary care setting. Everyone with diabetes needs strict control of blood pressure,  blood sugar levels and weight to help reduce the risk of complications from the disease.

Family Planning

Our doctors and practice nurse have all trained in gynaecology and can advise you on the most suitable form of contraception for you.

24 hour Blood Pressure Monitors

This is a small device attached to your arm and belt that monitors your blood pressure at 30-60 minute intervals for 24 hours.
